Nothern Guanacaste
This Unit included Costa Rica's pacific coast from the border with Nicaragua up to Punta Cerritos, located 22km. west of the city of Santa Cruz. It covers an extension of approximately 100 km. of the Pacific Coast.
Northern Guanacaste has two main tourism centers, Liberia (lodging center for distribution, connection, and tours) and Santa Cruz, and three secondary tourism centers El Coco, Tamarindo and Flamingo.
Its main attractions are: The Santa Rosa National Park, which includes La Casona Histórica, the spawning of the sea turtle, Playa Naranjo, and the Dry Tropical Forest, complemented with some beaches such as Puerto Soley, the Hachal, Cabuyal, and diving sites near Punta Morros, Punta Santa Elena and the Bolaños and Murciélago Islands.
Its beaches are considered the country´s best especially those located within the Tourism Pole of the Gulf of Papagayo (Nacascolo, Virador, Iguanita, and Panamá).
It is the area with most development, outside of the Central Valley, based on high - investment hotels with the potential for a direct demand. The Daniel Oduber International Airport and the increasing frequency of charter flights ad the development of the Papagayo project have had an important impact on this region. Its main product is sun and beaches, sports fishing, gold, diving, and recreation in general.
Subunit Tourism Pole of Papagayo
This subunit is located in the Gulf of Papagayo, province of Guanacaste; it goes from Punta Cabuyal up to Punta Cacique. It includes the district of Nacascolo of the canton of Liberia to the North and the district of Sardinal to the South.
It is in this subunit where the country´s main planned tourism polo, the Papagayo Tourism Pole, is being developed on an area of 2000 hectares that cover seventeen beaches of a great natural beauty, among which we can mention Playa Blanca, Nacascolo, Monte del Barco, Panamá, Hermosa, Manzanillo, Virador, Prieta, Pochote, Huevos, Zaportillal, Prieta, Buena, among others.
In this subunit the main product is sun-beach and ocean, and area in which a person may enjoy activities related with the scenic views of the gulf and coasts, a diversity of beaches, mangroves, coral reefs, a diversity of flora and fauna, among others. The subunit currently offers 833 rooms distributed in three and four-start establishments.
