Central Valley of Costa Rica

The Central Valley is the largest planning unit; it brings together a large amount and diversity of attractions, a highly developed hotel offer and infrastructure that offer access to the main attractions. It also has a large potential for business tourism, incentives, and seminars.

It covers an ample territory that goes on the West from the city of San Ramon up to Turrialba, and to the East from the Poás Volcano to the North up to the Area of Los Santos to the South. The main tourism center is the city of San José and the cities of Alajuela, Cartago, and Heredia act as secondary centers.

Among its main attractions are the city of San José, the Irazú, Poás, Barva, Turrialba Volcanoes, and the Juan Castro Blanco Park, which have been the distinctive note of the products of the Central Valley during its entire consolidation period. Besides the above, it has the national parks of Braulio Carrillo, Guayabo, Tapantí, as well as other attractions and destinations among which Sarchí, Coronado, the Orosí Valley, and Ujarrás, the Reventazón and Pacuare Rivers stand out.

It is also an important area for recreational activities such as museums, culture, nightlife, golf, and others.

Puntarenas and Islands of the Gulf - Costa Rica

This area is characterized by its spatial discontinuity, since it includes two sectors of the coast of the Gulf of Nicoya. The union between both coasts is through marine transportation. The Corridor extends from Punta Loros, to the South of Puerto Caldera up to the mouth of the Bongo River.

The main tourism center is the city of Puntarenas, which also operates as a lodging, distribution, connection, and tour center. Other tourism centers are Tambor and the city of Cóbano with a potential nature. The latter does not have an adequate tourism offer, but it is possible to foresee its transformation into a distribution and connection center since the distance of more than 8 kilometers from the coast would not let it play the role of a lodging center. The main islands int he Gulf, which are connected through different marine routes, are one of Costa Rica's newest products, which conveniently exploited could generate a new image for the Country, besides diversifying the product. The islands of San Lucas, Chira, Tortuga and, even though it is geographically outside of the Gulf, the Isla del Coco, which is an high-level attraction of the Costa Rican tourism product, stands out.

The area from Playa Naranjo to Cabo Blanco includes two protected areas: the Curú Wildlife Refuge and the Cabo Blanco Absolute Reserve. It also has some marshes in good condition such as: the Organos Marsh, the Paquera Marsh, and the Cabo Blanco Marsh.

The other attractions of the sector are beaches, among which we can mention: Playa Organos, Playa Montezuma, Playa Cocal, Playa Colorada, Playa Naranjo, Playa Gigante, Playa Cabuya, and Playa Tambor.

The development is characterized mainly by high-comfort hotels that operate under the concept of "All-inclusive" and complementary offers are very scarce.

South Pacific of Costa Rica

The entrance and main center of distribution is the city of Pérez Zeledón, its limit extends to the border of the canton including the attractions of the Tinamastes strip such as the Waterfalls of Nauyaca, the town of Platanillo and up to the Barú River. Here is where the coastal sector starts and extends all the way to Punta Burica with a total length of 490km.

The main activities are enjoyment of the beach and marine resources, among tem the observation of whales and dolphins, as well as mangroves, great views, reptiles, sports fishing, surfing, hikes along the trails of the national parks, professional diving, energy hikes to the top of the Chirripó, enjoyment of botanical gardens, impressive waterfalls in protected areas are part of the main product offered by the tourism unit accessed through this information office. The main product is ecotourism, especially the one carried out between the Sierpe-Térraba Humedal; the Forest Reserve of Golfo Dulce, the Marino Ballena National Park, the Biological Reserve of Isla del Caño and the Corcovado National Park.

Beach tourism has a large potential in the coastal area of Dominical -Piñuela; Playa Platanares; Zancudo, and Pavones. The mountain product is identified in the subunit of the Talamanca Mountain Range where San Gerardo de Rivas and san Vito de Coto Brus stand out as towns that permit access to the Chirripó National Park and the La Amistad World Heritage Site.

Additionally, there is a large potential int he development of rural tourism in settlements of peasants distributed all throughout the region. In this area there are two very important protected areas, the National Park of Corcovado, which the Magazine National Geographic has defined as the richest biological location in the world, and the Biosphere Reserve declared World Heritage, which is part of the La Amistad International Park.

Central Pacific of Costa Rica

The Central Pacific includes the coastal area between Punta Loros (in front of the Carara Biological Reserve) up to the Mouth of Barú River. It is a coastal area that combines open-sea longitudinal beaches with small and large bays, with an extension of more than 130 kilometers facing the coast.

In function of the territorial extension of the Planning Central Pacific structure is based on two main tourism centers a two secondary ones. The main ones are Jacó in Quepos and the secondary ones are Parrita and San Isidro del General.

The main attractions are two protected areas located to the extremes of the sector, which are the Carara Reserve and the Manuel Antonio National Park. Besides the above there is on one hand beaches among which we can mention Herradura, Jacó, Palma, Bejuco, Palo Seco, Espadilla, etc.

Complementing these attractions there are others of a great potential value, such as fishing in the marshes and mangroves (Damas, Palo Seco, Palma) and surfing in Playa Hermosa.

On the other hand, down to Jaco's proximity to San José and other important parts of the Central Valley, it is the main destination for both beach and recreational weekend national tourism, and it is one of the major points of interest of the Canadian market, while the Manuel Antonio National Park is one of the country's highest ranked natural sites and the most visited national park both by the international and local market.

In its totality, the attractions of this sector can make up a product destined to the local and regional demand for sun and beach. On the other hand, there are excellent conditions for practicing surfing and for the Natural History segment of the market.
