Tips for a Great Surf Trip to Costa Rica

With a variety of surf breaks, Costa Rica is not only a great place for expert surfers, but for novices as well. There are plenty of places up and down both the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines to surf at no matter your skill set. The waves in Costa Rica are consistent and steady, which means that there is always a wave somewhere waiting to be surfed!

Surfing Girls in Mal Pais To help your surfing vacation in Costa Rica, here are a few handy and helpful hints to get you on your way to having the best break ever.

Whether you are an expert surfer or a beginner, you should try and bring your own board as surf board rentals in Costa Rica are not very good in most places. The boards in some places are often of an inferior quality and can hamper your surfing experience, instead of enhancing it.

Another key tip is to bring a good board bag as it will protect your board from the elements. A good board bag is also necessary if you plan on surfing around the country, as it will keep your board safe from any dings while you travel.

Keep in mind that the sun can get pretty strong in Costa Rica, so a good sunscreen and a Rash Gard is an absolute must. A surf hat is also a good idea.

Avoid traveling with multiple surf boards, as it can limit your mobility, especially if you are going to a more remote surf location or if you are traveling by bus.

If you plan on traveling by plane across Costa Rica, keep in mind that you have to pay extra for your surf board as it is treated as baggage.

Also check in ahead of time to make sure that there is room on board the plane to take your surf board. If there isn't, then you have to leave your board behind. Sansa usually accepts boards up to a certain length, while Nature Air has restriction on the weight of your board.

Most international airlines charge you US$ 100 to bring a surfboard bag that has no more than 2 surfboards in it.

Another important tip is to bring your own soft racks and straps for your surf board, as most rental car companies in Costa Rica don't have them.

A great place to learn to surf in Costa Rica is at a surf camp, where surfing, accommodations and food are a package deal. These camps are ideal for beginners, while for the experienced surfer they are a great place to get tips from local instructors.

Lastly, when surfing in Costa Rica remember to respect the locals and be nice to them, as you are a guest to their country!
