This area is located in the northern part of the country, covering part of the Atlantic slopes of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range and of the Tilarán Mountain Range and of the plains of San Carlos and the region of Los Chiles y Caño Negro. The main tourism center of the area of the Northern Plains is La Fortuna, (province of Alajuela) and its secondary centers are Ciudad Quesada and Tilarán.
This area holds several high-level attractions among witch the following stand out: the Arenal Volcano and lagoon, the Tabacón River, the Chato Cerro, the Frio River, the Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge, complemented with rivers appropriate for rafting, waterfalls, and fruit plantations.
It is a region that has experienced and important growth based especially on small hotels and companies offering various services.
Sub-Unit of Volcanoes of Guanacaste
This unit has a subunit called Volcanoes of Guanacaste, which includes a strip of territory that covers the main volcanoes of the Province of Guanacaste, with the exception of the Arenal, that goes from the Orosí Volcano to the Northwest up to the Tenorio volcano, in the Southeast. This unit's main tourism attractions are the volcanic cones located in said strip, among which are Orosí, Santa María, Rincón de la Vieja, Miravalles, and Tenorio, which are located within various national parks. The subunit has the advantage of having different climate zones, since it varies from very low altitudes characteristic of the lowlands of Guanacaste up to volcanic peaks that go from 1800 meters over sea level to 2028 meters over sea level in the Miravalles volcano.
This subunit constitutes a differentiated tourism product, with additional attractions such as the observation of fumaroles and volcanic mud, hot baths, a tropical dry forest, pre-mountain and mountain forests, etc., including a visit to the Miravalles Geothermal Plant, the only one in the country.
It has considerable lodging options that are constantly improving their quality, with mountain hotels and accommodations for ecological tourism that add up to 7 companies with a total of 165 rooms. If these, 4 companies have tourism declarations with 127 rooms.
Sub-unit of Sarapiquí
The unit of the Northern Plains also includes the subunit called Sarapiquí. This is an area with an ample international acknowledgement due to the investigations carried out for 40 years in the Biological Station La Selva of the Organization for Tropical Studies.
It has important resources, among which we can point out the Sarapiqui River, part of the Braulio Carrillo Park and several private reserves that protect important flora and fauna resources. It is a special area for bird watching and a very specific tourism product focused on naturalist segments, adventure, and ecotourism has been developed. It currently has 134 rooms with tourism declaration, which represent and adequate offer for the type of product promoted.
