Flora and Fauna in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an extraordinary refuge of life and is full of natural surprises, holding in its territory of 51,100 km that represents 0.03 per cent of the world's biodiversity. The vegetable formations vary according to the altitude of the land. In this sense we can distinguish the tropical forest in the Northeastern and Southern coasts, where rains are more abundant and they have vegetation with large trees.
In the mountainous area of the Atlantic, between 800 and 1500 meters over sea level, the vegetation is that characteristic of a humid tropical forest, while a dry one is predominant in the Central Plateau, where there are less trees and instead a great number of graminea and herbacea plants.
The combined tropical foreset is what prevails in the highest regions. With regard to Costa Rica fauna, we can state that Costa Rica has an extraordinarily numerous and diverse number of species, and depending on the area a person might be able to observe Quetzales, 5 o 6 species of Toucans, Moose, Deer, Anteaters, Sloths, Monkeys, Coati, Nutrias, foxes, Jaguaars, Ocelots and Pumas, Limpets among many other animals.
Besides the species mentioned, the wild areas hold around 13,000 species of plants, more than 2,000 species of day butterflies, 4,500 night ones, 163 species of amphibians, 220 of reptiles, 1,600 of sweet and salt-water fishes, and 850 species of birds, among others.
