Capital of Costa Rica

San José is the capital of the Republic of Costa Rica and the capital of the province of San José. The city is the country´s political and economical center, and it holds more than half its commercial establichments and services. It receives its name in honor of Joseph of Nazareth, putative father of Jesus of Nazareth.
The same as the country's older cantons, the central canton of San José was founded on December 7, 1848. The population appeared around 1737-1738, and it is the capital since 1823. It is a city with an interesting combination of history and modernity, even though its downtown is practically inhabited and it becomes a passing place that during the day brings together more than one million people, which causes traffic chaos and increase in contamination levels.
Despite its problems, according to studies carried out all throughout Latin America, San José continues to be one of the safest and less violent cities of the region. In 2006 it was designated as the Latin American Capital of Culture.
