In the evening after supper we invited our host family to play the card game of Uno with us. It was difficult to teach them the rules of the game considering the language barrier. Overall it was an enriching experience to see how such a simple game of colors and numbers can bring two cultures together.
This was just the start of a very fulfilling adventure into the life of a Tico. Staying in a host family allows you to get to know the little things about how life in Costa Rica is different than staying elsewhere. We learned that things get started early in the mornings, there's usually no air-conditioning, no clothes driers, and no hot water. While these things were a challenge at first we became accustomed to this laid back lifestyle.
